Mineralization of metre-long biosilica structures unravelled

A new study in the international journal Nature Chemistry, with participation of Prof. Wörheide, discovered that the anchoring spicules from the metre-long stalk of the glass rope sponge (Hyalonema sieboldi) is templated by a novel hydroxylated fibrillar collagen, which enables its exceptional mechanical properties, i.e. its flexibility.
